You are cordially invited to attend concerts and vernissages organised by the Polish Jazz Association Wrocław in 2024 as part of the "Accessible Culture" programme.

The programme was co-financed by funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Fund for Promotion of Culture - a state earmarked fund - and from funds ZAW STOART

The project includes a series of cultural events of an educational, creative, arte-therapeutic and integrative nature, simultaneously making use of different types of art forms: music and visual arts, as well as various activating forms: workshops, concerts, vernissages, which will provide a unique opportunity to benefit from a diverse cultural offer to a wide audience during the course of a single task. Participation in the events is free of charge.

Project concept

The activities will include children and young people from the John Paul II Non-Public Special School and Educational Centre at the ZOL for Children in Jaszkotel and children from the Special School and Educational Centre No. 10 at Parkowa Street in Wrocław, as well as their families, carers and other inhabitants of Lower Silesia (people from different social groups, age groups, people with special needs). Children from the above-mentioned institutions will be addressed with a wide range of workshops based on a method synthesising various art forms: sound and visual.

The accompanying events - two concerts and vernissages - will be open to all, helping to break down barriers, providing access to valuable and diverse cultural resources for many listeners and viewers at the same time. They will present the work of contemporary artists working in a jazz-oriented style, as well as the work of Ewa Kutylak, a contemporary Lower Silesian visual artist whose work has been largely inspired by music.

Jazz and the visual arts, although different in form, share many common points of contact, which allows for interesting connections between them. Colours and sounds play an important role in their integration. Jazz compositions can often be compared to paintings, where individual sounds correspond to different colours. Both painters and jazz musicians use contrast, tonality and rhythm to create an impression of harmony. Jazz, usually based on improvisation, like the visual arts, gives artists the freedom to express themselves in unique ways.

As part of the project, one concert by Monika Wiśniowska-Basel & Jazz Family Band will be dedicated specifically to children from the centres, their families and carers - it will take place on 4 June 2024 in the auditorium of the Special School and Educational Centre No. 10 at ul. Parkowa 27 in Wrocław.

In the meantime, today we invite you to two concerts open to all, combined with vernissages of Ewa Kutylak and children taking part in workshops. Details of the events will appear in the News tab and on the https://www.facebook.com/PSJWroc

Playing with Hope 2023

we play with hope 2023 programme

In 2023, the Play with Hope programme returns!

Let's come together and tune our ears. Three unique musical events for children and adults in a new intergenerational character. Music lovers, jazz sceptics, music ignoramuses - everyone will catch the bug here, after all, jazz, like summer, is all about good energy.

The Polish Jazz Association Wrocław invites you to 3 open concerts aimed at the general public, aimed at common integration and sensitisation to the therapeutic aspects of music. The concerts are part of the second edition of the GraMY with Hope programme, which aims to improve access to culture. It includes artistic and educational events, including workshops, concerts and art- and music-therapeutic activities aimed at children and young people.

The GraMY with Hope programme is also aimed at young people and children - wards of orphanages run by the Karkonoskie Stowarzyszenie Pomocy Dziecku i Rodzinie Nadzieja (Karkonosze Association for Helping Children and Families - Hope) in Jelenia Góra and the Karkonoskie County. The programme, which we have been running since 2022, includes a range of cultural, animation and therapeutic activities aimed at supporting children and young people in their emotional development and improving access to culture.

All are welcome to attend the 3 jazz music encounters:

ZBIGNIEW LEWANDOWSKI QUINTET | CKAiIL Czasoprzestrzeń - Klub Łącznik | 14.05, 18:00

On 14 May at Klub Łącznik | Czasoprzestrzeń - the heart of Wrocław's green and vibrant Big Island - we will hear the latest instalment of Zbigniew Lewandowski's quintet. The ensemble of Poland's leading percussionist and pedagogue, who is celebrating the jubilee of 50 years of artistic work, will première musical material. The leader will be accompanied by Robert Jarmużek, Tomasz Pruchnicki, Jakub Olejnik and the New York guitarist Kenny Carr.

KUBA STANKIEWICZ TRIO | Sala Koncertowa Akademii Muzycznej im. Karola Lipińskiego we Wrocławiu | 11.06.2023, 17:00

In June (date to be announced soon), the Kuba Stankiewicz Trio, one of Poland's leading jazz pianists, will perform at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music Concert Hall in Wrocław. Kuba's music is distinguished by economy of expression, extraordinary sensitivity to colour and sound, and an individual approach to composition combined with a sense of dynamics and space.

REPERCUSSION - LIVINGROOM MUSIC | Klub Kwadrat, Jeleniogórskie Centrum Kultury | 14.09.2023, 12:00

On 14 September, the grande finale of musical events will be a unique concert in Jelenia Góra, a city whose cultural scene is increasingly intertwined with that of Wrocław. The REPERCUSSION ensemble, using percussion instrumentation, will introduce the audience and listeners to the fascinating current of instrumental theatre - consisting of visualisation and staged play. Everyday objects, elements of acting and happenings will be used. The members of the ensemble are percussion graduates of the Academy of Music in Wrocław, who are actively involved in the music market as performers and pedagogues conducting extensive educational activities addressed to children and young people.
Admission to all events is free and open to the general public. For more up-to-date information, please visit our Facebook: www.fb.pl/PSJWroc

Read more about the Play with Hope project:

The planned activities, which have an engaging and integrative character, enable the development of passions and interests, sensitise and support the process of personal empowerment and preparation for independent life. They offer the opportunity to have contact with music both in the form of micro-concerts and trips, which for some charges is the first ever contact with music in a theatre and concert space. Communing with music, especially live music, is an important element for the all-round mental and intellectual development of a child.

The effect of the programme is to improve the quality of life of the wards of children's homes, to increase access to cultural events for a group of children and young people and to reduce the negative cultural and therapeutic effects of living in care centres.
The effect will be an improvement in the quality of life of the wards of orphanages, familiarisation of the children with Polish cultural goods, which in this form are inaccessible to the excluded and those from smaller towns. Participation in concerts and workshops will sensitise and support the process of empowerment of the charges and prepare them to enter independent life, reduce stress, improve mental health and general emotional state and mental balance achieved through the proposed music therapy activities.

Pawel Lisiecki Quartet "Bound to Happen"

Pawel Lisiecki Quartet "Bound To Happen"

New album released by the Polish Jazz Association Wrocław.

The quartet of guitarist and composer Paweł Lisiecki is a representation of the young generation of musicians associated with the Wrocław jazz community. Apart from the leader, the band consists of Łukasz Zgoda - saxophones, electronics, Rafał Krzywosz playing the bass guitar and Marcin Urszulak - percussionist.

The band's music is inspired by the young wave of jazz artists in minimalist forms with elements of nu-jazz. When asked about their inspirations, the musicians cite artists such as Gilad Hekselman, Christian Scott, GoGo Penguin and Jonathan Kreisberg.

The quartet's music sounds fresh and modern, presenting a wide range of sounds, from minimalist and spacey to dynamic. The compositions, often based on irregular meters, are arranged with attention to the smallest details. The guitar and saxophone correspond superbly both in the melodic and sometimes extended themes, as well as in the improvisations, in which the soloists move with great freedom to create an interesting, coherent sound, while the whole is complemented by the energetic and modern playing of the rhythm section. The classic sound of the guitar quartet is complemented by delicate, ambient textures that add atmosphere and space to the compositions.
The release of the album "Bound To Happen" was supported by funds from the Municipality of Wroclaw www.wroclaw.pl.
